Domain Name Registration

A domain name is the easy-to-remember address (URL) of your website, such as www.thissideupsoftware.com.

The server that hosts your website has a numbered address (IP address), just like your telephone. A telephone book provides a mapping between names and numbers, so that someone only needs to remember your name instead of memorizing your phone number. Likewise, someone only needs to remember the URL of your website instead of memorizing the IP address. The person who wants to call you needs to look up your number in the telephone book, whereas it's the job of your browser to send a request out into the Internet to look up the IP address of your website server.

The domain name needs to be purchased (between $10 and $15 per name) and then it needs to be added to a database so that typing in www.thissideupsoftware.com in a browser ends up finding the server and downloading the website to your browser.

The process of purchasing the domain name and adding it to the database is known as domain name registration.
